James W. Strickland, M.D. |

James W. Strickland, M.D. graduated from Indiana University
in 1958 with an AB in Anatomy and Physiology. He
received his medical degree in 1962 from the Indiana
University School of Medicine and completed his residency
in orthopaedic surgery at the Indiana University
Medical Center. Dr Strickland served a fellowship
in Hand Surgery at Passavant Memorial Hospital, Northwestern
University Medical School in 1969. From 1966-1968,
he served as a Captain in the United States Air Force-Medical
Corps and also was the Chief Orthopaedic Surgeon
at Ellsworth AFB, Rapid City, South Dakota.
Dr. Strickland enjoys a distinguished career. He is
Clinical Professor of the Department of Orthopaedic
Surgery at Indiana University School of Medicine. He
serves on the Board of Directors of the Indiana Chapter
of the Arthritis Foundation, and is a member of the
Board f Trustees of the Orthopaedic Research and Education
Foundation.
Dr. Strickland is Past President of the American Academy
of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Society for Surgery
of the Hand, and the Foundation for Surgical Research
and Education, and has served on the Executive Committee
of the Academic Orthopaedic Society.
In 1996, Dr. Strickland received the First St. Vincent
Hospital Distinguished Physician Award. Selected by
his colleagues and peers, the award recognized his
outstanding patient care and the contributions he has
made to medicine on a regional, nation and international
level. He also received the Humanitarian Award and
the Volunteer of the Year awards from the Arthritis
Foundation, Indiana Chapter in 2002 and 2003.
Dr. Strickland has written over 200 scientific articles,
book chapters and commentaries, and editorials, and
has given over 800 lectures and presentations at meetings,
symposia, conferences and instructional courses, locally,
nationally and internationally. His writings and presentations
have concentrated of disorders of the hand and upper
extremity, medical ethics, and patient care. In recent
years, Dr. Strickland has concentrated his practice
on the management of arthritic disorders of the wrist
and hand.
Dr. Strickland is an avid basketball fan, fly fisherman,
tennis player and golfer. He and his wife Sandy have
three children and five grandchildren.
